Grenadier Range
Included search variations: Grenadier Range, Grenadier, Grenadiers
The Grenadier Range is a rugged subrange of the greater San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado, situated within the Weminuche Wilderness between the towns of Silverton and Durango. Unlike most other mountains in the San Juans which have volcanic origins from around 30 million years ago, the Grenadier Range (and neighboring Needle Mountains) are comprised of ~1.5 billion year old Precambrian basement rock that never got covered by the thick blanket of lava and ash from the San Juan volcanic field. The tough quartzite and conglomerate rock of the Grenadiers has been folded and eroded into the swooping curved shapes of the famous Vestal and Arrow Peaks.
