Sheep Mountain Special Management Area
Located south of Telluride and west of Silverton, the Sheep Mountain area is one of the most beautiful alpine regions of the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado, featuring the famous and very popular Ice Lakes Basin, a high alpine basin filled with brilliant turquoise lakes surrounded by vast meadows of wildflowers. Yet this beloved area has no wilderness designation.
The San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act, proposed in 2019, seeks to designate this part of the San Juans as the Sheep Mountain Special Management Area, which would protect it from future mining and new road construction. You can learn more about the San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act and help support it with the San Juan Citizens Alliance.
