Needle Mountains

Included search variations: Needle Mountains, Needles Range, Needle Range, Needles Mountains

The Needle Mountains are a sub-range of the San Juan Mountains, located within the Weminuche Wilderness between the towns of Silverton and Durango in southwest Colorado. Unlike most other mountains in the San Juans which have volcanic origins from around 30 million years ago, the Needle Mountains (and neighboring Grenadier Range) are comprised of ~1.5 billion year old Precambrian basement rock that never got covered by the thick blanket of lava and ash from the San Juan volcanic field. The central Needle Mountains are composed of pink granite, forming some of the most jagged and spectacular mountains in Colorado, including four 14ers.
