Mont Chaberton B&W

Haute-Alps, France | 2026

Mount Chaberton in France (3,131 m / 10,272 ft) rises above the clouds as seen from atop Monte Fraiteve above the ski town of Sestriere in Italy.

On the summit of Mount Chaberton are the remains of the highest fortress in Europe, built by the Italians before World War I. Although the "Battleship in the Clouds" wasn't used in WWI, it was rearmed in World War II under Mussolini's regime and bombarded French positions near Briançon in June of 1940. Once the cloudy weather cleared, French artillery were able to respond and successfully destroyed most of the fort's turrets. At the end of the war, Charles de Gaulle demanded the symbolic mountain, and by the Treaty of Paris between Italy and the Allied Powers, the border was moved so that Mount Chaberton became French territory.
